What Decides the Cost of Chiller Rigging & Shifting in India?
"What will it cost to shift our chiller?" is the first question every project manager asks — and any contractor who quotes a number before asking six questions back is guessing. Here is what actually drives the price, so you can read quotes intelligently.
1. Tonnage and dimensions
A 30 TR scroll chiller and a 900 TR centrifugal machine are different jobs entirely. Weight decides the jacking, rolling and crane capacity; dimensions decide whether the unit passes through existing openings or needs dismantling into sections.
2. Access and travel path
The cheapest move is a straight, ground-level path from trailer to foundation. Costs climb with every constraint: narrow gates, ramps, soft ground needing steel plates, floor-loading limits, or work inside a live facility with restricted hours.
3. Height — terrace and basement work
Lifting a chiller to a terrace can double or triple the price, because crane capacity is dictated by radius, not just weight. A 10-tonne chiller at 45 m height needed a 300-tonne crane at one of our hospital projects. Basement lowering has its own costs: gantry setups, cut-out coordination and slower, staged descents.
4. Crane or manual methods
Crane-assisted jobs carry crane hire, mobilization and sometimes road-permission costs — but finish faster. Manual methods (jacks, rollers, chain blocks) avoid crane costs but take more days and more crew. The right answer is site-specific; a good contractor will price the cheaper safe option, not the more profitable one.
5. Distance, location and lodging
Out-of-city sites add transport for tools and tackles, plus crew travel and lodging. For multi-day jobs in remote locations, ask whether lodging is in the client's scope or built into the rate — unclear scope here is a common source of disputes.
6. What a professional quote should include
- Clear scope: unloading, shifting, positioning, and whether installation/alignment is included
- Whose scope: crane, rails, sleepers, power supply, site clearance
- Test certificates for lifting tackle and operator competency documents
- Payment terms tied to milestones, and GST shown separately
- Insurance/liability position for the equipment being handled
From the field
Very low quotes usually mean one of three things: the contractor hasn't visited the site, plans to raise 'extras' later, or is cutting corners on certified tackle and trained riggers. With a machine worth crores hanging from the hook, that is a poor place to save.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the typical cost range for chiller unloading in India?
Simple ground-level unloading of a mid-size chiller can start around ₹30,000–₹80,000 per unit, while complete unloading-to-installation scopes for large machines with crane work run into several lakhs. Site conditions move the number more than the chiller itself — get a site-specific quote.
Why do crane-assisted jobs cost 30–40% more?
Crane hire, mobilization/demobilization, outrigger ground preparation and statutory compliance all add cost. In exchange, the job completes in a fraction of the time — often the cheaper option overall once project delay costs are counted.
Is a site visit necessary before quoting?
For anything beyond a simple unloading, yes. A site visit confirms access, ground conditions, crane positioning and obstructions — and converts a guess into a firm price that won't change on execution day.
